Common Phrases and Idioms part I

1. As a matter of fact (सच तो यह है/ वास्तव में)

(Sach to ye hai usne mere liye kuch nahi kiya) As a matter of fact, he did nothing for me.

2. At any cost – (किसी भी कीमत पर)

(Kisi bhi keemat par mujhe waha Jana hai.) I have to go there at any cost. 

3. Behind one’s back – (पीठ-पीछे)

(Hame kisi ke peeth piche burai nahi karni chahiye ) We should not criticise behind one’s back. 

4. Castle in the air – (हवाई महल)

(Kya woh hawai Mahal banata hai ?) Does he make castle in the air?

5. Every now and then – (अक्सर)

(Wo log aksar jhoot bolte hai.) They tell lies every now and then.

6. Give rise to – (कारण पैदा होना)

(Korona ne mahgai ko janm diya hai.) Corona has given rise to inflation.

7. In a hurry – जल्दीबाजी में

(Aap jaldi me maloom padhte hai) You seem to be in hurry.

8. On and on – (लगातार/ निरंतर)

(Woh lgataar bol rha tha Bina ruke) He was speaking on and on without a pause.

9. Sooner or later – (देर-सवेर/कभी न कभी)

(Kabhi na kabhi tumhe yaha aana hoga) you have to come here sooner or later. 

Common Phrases and Idioms

10. Sooner the better – (जितना जल्दी हो अच्छा है/ जल्द से जल्द)

(Jitna jaldi ho ose cigarette Pina chor dena chahiye) He should quit smoking sooner the better. 

11. Instead of – (बदले में)

Instead of helping, he scolded me. मदद करने के बदले उसने मुझे डांटा।

12. Not to speak of – (दूर की बात)

(Naashta to door ki baat hai usne Pani ke liye bhi nahi pucha) Not to speak of breakfast, he didn’t ask even water. 

13. At a stretch – (लगातार)

(Kya tum 10 minutes Tak lgataar apni saans rok sakte ho ?) Can you hold your breath for ten minutes at a stretch ?

14. In favour of – (के पक्ष में)

(Kuch log Sahrukh ke paksh mein aage aaye ) some people came forward in favour of Sharukh. 

15. In short – (संक्षेप में)

(Tumhe lambi nahi, short speech dene ki zaroorat hai) You need to give speech in short not long.

15. Hard and fast – (कठोर)

(School mein koi kathor niyam nahi hai) There is no any hard and fast rule in the school. 

Common Phrases and Idioms part II

1. Crying need – (समय की पुकार)

(Utrakhand mein baadh wala alaqa bhojan samay ki pukaar hai)

Food is crying need of the flooded area of Uttrakhand.

2. For the time being – (फिलहाल)

(Baad mein baat karte hai, filhaal phone rakhta hun) Talk to you later, for the time being I hang up phone.

3. In no time – (तुरंत)

(Dacoity ke baad apradhi turant gayeb ho gaye ) After robbery, criminal disappeared from the bank in no time. 

4. All of a sudden – (एकदम अचानक से)

(Woh sadak par chal rha tha ekdam achanak se car aagayi ) He was walking along the road all of a sudden a car came. 

5. Good for nothing – (निकम्मा)

(Raja ke chaaro beta nikamma the) All four sons of the king were good for nothing.

6. From top to bottom – ऊपर से नीचे तक

(Woh upar se niche tak bhigi Hui thi) She was wet from top to bottom.

7. For the sake of – (के वास्ते/ के लिए)

(Bhagwan ke waste usse chor do) Leave her for the sake of God. 

8. In a nutshell – (चंद शब्दों में)

(Tum apne bare mein Chand shabdon mein bol sakte ho) You can speak about yourself in a nutshell. 

9. In spite of – (के बावजूद)

(Daulat ke bawajood, woh dikhawa nahi karta hai)

In spite of wealth, he does not show off. 

10. In front of – (के सामने)

(School ke samne ek mandir hai) There is a temple in front of the school.

11. In addition to – (अतिरिक्त, के अलावा)

(Paisa aur khana ke alawa tumhe aur kya chahiye?) What else do you want in addition to money and food ?

12. So long as – जबतक

(Jab tak aapka Mann hai yaha rukiye) Stay over here as long as you wish. 

13. In search of – (खोज में)

(Kya tum nokri ke khoj mein Gaye the?) Did you go in search of a job ?

14. Heart and soul – (तहेदिल से)

(Humne ya kaam tahe dil se kiya) We engaged heart and soul in this work.

15. On the basis of – (के आधार पर)

(Jaati ke aadhar par teacher student mein farq nahi karte) The teacher doesn’t differentiate students on the basis of caste.
