A king lived in a great palace (महल) with beautiful garden. There was a small lake (झील) nearby (करीब में).

Once, when the princes were playing near the the lake, they saw a green turtle (कछुआ) and ran back to the palace in fear (डर के मारे).

“There is a terrible demon (भयंकर राक्षस) lying on the bank (किनारा) of the lake.” They said to their father.

The king sent two servants to bring this demon to the court. Soon the turtle was brought to the king’s court. Since (चुंकि) he had never seen a turtle before, he too got scared of (डर गया) it. He looked at the hard shell (कवच) of the turtle carefully and said to his ministers, “The demon is wearing a strong armour. What method (तरीका) should be used to kill him?”

“Let’s grind (पीसना) him to power.” Said the first minister. “That will not be an easy method.” Said the second minister. “Let’s put him in a hot oven (चूल्हा).” “Let us throw him into the lake, at the place where the water flows over the rocks into the river.” Suggested the third minister.

The turtle was happy at the last suggestion. But he said, “Don’t treat (बर्ताव) me with such cruelty (ऐसा बेरहमी से). “Don’t throw me over the rocks (पहाड़ के ऊपर से).”

The king immediately (तुरंत) ordered his servants to throw him into the water. The clever turtle laughed as he swam down the river to his home in the sea.
